"Tordenskioldsdage - Året er 1717" is a historic festival in which some 1000 actors and extras take part. Fladstrand is a mass of different activities. Around Krudttårnet (the Powder Tower) swarms of soldiers occupy the military camps. As darkness settles over the area, the cannons are set off and "Drømmen om Hvide Ørn" – the great historical drama at the harbour - begins.

Based on Frederikshavn's historical past as a port of dispatch for supplies to Norway, which was formally part of the Danish Realm, each year a drama "Året er 1717" is put on in the area. It is a historical festival in which 1000 actors and extras take part.
The area around Krudttårnet steps more than 300 years back in time and teems with soldiers, harlots and children wearing 18th century costumes.
Tordenskiold
In 1715 Peter Nansen Wessel operated in the Baltic Sea, where he captured the Swedish frigate "Vita Örn", on which he became the commanding officer.
On 24 February 1716 he was enobled for this feat and thus earned the right to call himself Tordenskiold.

Tordenskiold Days – The Year is 1717
Fladstrand teems with activity. Around Krudttårnet, soldiers swarm around the camps. In the village of Fladstrand all sorts of goods are peddled, industrious hands are at work in the workshops and the local inns provide plenty of both solid and liquid refreshment.
Every now and again loud booms from cannons and muskets interrupt the soft tones of 18th century Scandinavian songs.
Suddenly
A soldier has stolen the provisions and is being punished by running the gauntlet, and two officers have been trying to woo the same fair maiden, which leads to a pistol duel.
In the evening King Frederik IV arrives to the accompaniment of a 27-gun salute in order to inspect the troops.
As darkness settles over the area, the cannons are set off and "Drømmen om Hvide Ørn" – the great historical drama at the harbour - begins.

Eating at the King's table
Large groups and businesses can experience Tordenskiold's Days throughout the year in the form of the "At the King's Table" event at the manor house Herregården Knivholt. This involves an 18th century dinner with a dramatic performance, music typical of the period and the dramatic story of Tordenskiold and Fladstrand.
Historical sailing ships
Businesses and groups are offered the chance to charter one of the historic sailing ships that sail from Skagen and Sæby to Tordenskiold's Days in Frederikshavn. Lunch is served to the accompaniment of the smell of rope and tar and the sound of the ship's cannons being fired en route.

Fladstrand, the Great Nordic War and Tordenskiold
The fortifications in Fladstrand were built in 1686 and later assumed great importance as Tordenskiold's only base outside Copenhagen during the Great Nordic War at the beginning of the 18th century.
Norway was still part of the Danish Realm, but was unable to support itself. It was therefore necessary to sail lots of grain to the Norwegians, but after the war with Sweden broke out, it was no longer possible to sail along the Swedish coast, and Fladstrand was chosen as the point of dispatch.
