Læsø bathing beaches

Læsø has a coastline of around 100 km, of which 25 km has good beaches. Bathing beaches are found on the west coast and on part of the north coast. In Læsø's southwest corner there's a very special bathing beach, namely Stokken.

Vesterø beach

The beach stretching south of the harbour, Vesterø Havn, is Læsø's most popular beach for families with young children. Here there's shallow water out to the third sandbank, a fine beach and large dunes in which to hide and play.
There's access to the beach at several points: at Vesterø Havn, at Kongevejen and close to the church, Vesterø Kirke, there's a car park with a public toilet.

The north coast

On the north coast there's a fine sandy beach from Holtemmen via Storedal stretching almost all the way to Horneks. At the car park at Storedal there's a public toilet, in addition to a barbecue that can be used by anyone.

Just east of Horneks is Hvidebakker, which is a wonderful beach with a high ridge of dunes.
The section of beach west of the harbour at Østerby Havn is also a fine sandy beach.

Sea kayak

The conditions on Læsø are ideal for sea kayaking. Trips are available which are suitable for beginners, but there are also challenging trips for experienced kayakers. As a new beginner you should choose a day with calm weather and remain in shallow water, e.g. a trip along the beach from Vesterø to Stokken or a trip from Vesterø to Rønnerrevet, north of Holtemmen. For the more experienced, a trip along the north coast from Vesterø to Østerby is recommended. Remember to take a packed lunch and something to drink!

Surfing

If you love surfing, Læsø offers something for everyone, experts and beginners alike. If you belong to the latter category, you'll enjoy surfing at ”Flaget” north of the harbour at Vesterø Havn. You can also start in the very shallow water between Stokken and the beach near Sdr. Nyland - it's impossible to drift out to sea here! If you're more experienced, you can find greater challenges along Læsø's north coast, at Storedal, Hvidebakker and Danzigmand. Note that it isn't possible to hire surfing equipment on Læsø.

Stokken

You have to wade for about 50 m through the water to get to the elongated sandbank. It's quite an attraction when the entire family sets off with the necessities for a trip to the beach! Stokken is approx. 5 km long, so you can be sure of getting an area to yourself. A walk along the water's edge is also a great way of passing the time.
The western end of Stokken is declared a conservation area from 15 May to 15 July in order to protect the bird life there.

Amber on Læsø

Læsø is one of the places in Denmark where you can be fortunate enough to find amber. The condition for finding amber is that it must be very windy for an extended period. When the wind dies down and the sea level falls, the amber will be carried to the coast and deposited on the beach.
The beach at Danzigmand and Storedal and the area north of Vesterø Havn are good places to look for amber.

Stones on Læsø

A walk along the stony stretches of beach at Lilledal and east of Østerby Havn provides a good opportunity for interesting observations of different stones.
Many of the stones come from the bedrock in neighbouring countries; these include stones such as basalt, granite and gneiss. Indicator stones are stones that are only found as bedrock at a single locality. The most common indicator stones on Læsø are larvikite from Norway, rhomb porphyry and hornfels from the Oslo region and kinnediabas from Sweden.

Book about stones

Those with a particular interest in stones can buy a small publication called ’Sten på Stranden’ from the tourist office. This publication is an excellent help when trying to identify the many different finds that can be made.

Hornekshuset

At Horneks Odde you'll find Hornekshuset, which acts as a centre for the dissemination of marine nature. There's a photographic exhibition and a video about life below the surface of the sea. Fishing nets, trays and magnifying glasses are available. There are also tables, benches and barbecues, as well as new toilet facilities.

Disabled access

Two access ramps to the beach have been established for wheelchairs at Vesterø Kirke and Storedal. At Banstenen's car park a path has been established to the coastal cliff.
